What are asphalt shingles?

The roof covering can be made with different elements and one of the most effective and advantageous is asphalt shingle roofing. This solution has very particular characteristics that make it competitive with types of roofs that are very common in Italy, such as pantiles, Portuguese tiles, Marseille tiles and concrete tiles.

In this article we will discuss asphalt shingles, considering:

  • How they are made
  • Colours
  • Installation
  • Prices

Asphalt shingles: how are they made?

Asphalt or bituminous shingles, unlike other tiles, are made up of different materials that give shape to a single element ready to be used as a roof covering.

The internal part, the support of the shingle, can be made up of inorganic materials (for example, fibreglass) or of organic materials (for example, wood).

To make the base waterproof, shingles are coated with a layer of bitumen to which a finishing grit is added, which can be slate, sand, porcelain stoneware and basalt.

The construction technique allows making asphalt shingles of different shapes, from the classic rectangle to curved designs. This feature, together with the lower weight, distinguishes asphalt shingles from the more common tiles we see on Italian roofs.

Asphalt shingles: colours

Asphalt shingle roofs are often very recognizable because they have very particular colours.

The wide colour range is another peculiarity of this type of bituminous shingles. The external side can be made to have the colours of nature, so you can choose grey and red shingles, as well as those in shades of brown, green, blue, and even slate black.

The aesthetic result can be one that is seamlessly blended with its surroundings, or one that is in stark contrast with it, giving rise to buildings that do not go unnoticed.

Asphalt shingles: installation

Installing asphalt shingles requires precise technical steps, but does not present particular challenges for installers.

It is necessary to carefully measure and draw lines that will serve as a guide during installation, then proceed with the waterproofing and, finally, nail rows of asphalt shingles, overlapping them up to the ridge. Care must be taken to install the rows by open flame and with special adhesives.

The tools necessary for the installation of shingles are very common, because this type of roofing does not require special equipment to achieve excellent results.

Asphalt shingles: prices

The prices of asphalt shingles vary according to the types and construction characteristics.

Costs change according to the materials with which the bituminous shingle support is made and the finishes.

The important thing to know is that, generally, the installation of asphalt shingles on the roof is less expensive than of traditional tile installation Simple application operations make a significant contribution to reducing costs.
